This Privacy Policy describes how Night mode ("the App", "we", "us", "our") handles information when you use it. The App is built offline-first: it collects no personal data, has no account, no ads, and no analytics. It optionally uses Android's AccessibilityService API, explained first, in Section 1.

1Accessibility Service - what it sees, and why

Accessibility API disclosure

Night mode uses Android's AccessibilityService API. It is optional and stays off until you turn it on. Before Android's Accessibility settings open, the App shows a screen explaining exactly what the service does, with Agree and No thanks buttons - nothing happens unless you tap Agree and then switch the service on yourself.

The service does not read text on your screen, does not control or interact with other apps, and does not collect, store or share any personal or sensitive data. Nothing it sees ever leaves your phone.

Better dimming
Lets the dimming layer also cover the status bar, notification shade, keyboard and lock screen, which an ordinary overlay cannot reach.
Emergency off optional
Watches only for the Volume Up + Volume Down button combination, so you can turn dimming off from anywhere. No other key presses are recorded, and the App never sees what you type.
Per-app profiles Pro, optional
Reads which app is currently in the foreground (its package name), purely to apply the dim level you've chosen for that app. It is used only in memory - never logged, stored as history, or transmitted.
Auto-Dim Pro, optional
While dimming and Auto-Dim are on, captures screenshots through Android's Accessibility screenshot API, shrinks each one to a tiny low-resolution grid, and measures its average brightness on-device to adjust the dim level. Each screenshot is processed in memory and discarded immediately - never saved as an image, never written to disk, never transmitted anywhere.

Emergency off, Per-app profiles and Auto-Dim each have their own switch, so turning one on doesn't turn on the others. You can turn the service off at any time in Android Settings > Accessibility.

2Offline-first approach

Night mode is designed to run entirely on your device. Turning the dimming overlay on or off, choosing a dim level, scheduling bedtime hours, setting per-app profiles, saving presets, and every other feature are all processed locally. We do not operate any servers that collect, store, process, sell, rent, or share your settings, your usage, or anything about how you use the App.

3Information we collect

We do not collect personal information from users. Specifically, we do not collect:

The App has no account system and no sign-in of any kind - there is nothing tied to you for us to collect even if we wanted to.

4Settings stored on your device

The App stores your preferences locally, using Android's standard app-storage mechanism, so they persist between sessions:

This information never leaves your device. It is not transmitted to us or to any third party.

5Permissions used by the App

Display over other apps
Draws the darkening overlay itself - the one permission the App's core function depends on.
Notifications
Shows an ongoing status notification while dimming is on, with optional quick-adjust buttons.
Accessibility optional
Powers the features described in Section 1, and nothing else.
Battery settings shortcut optional
Some phone manufacturers aggressively stop background apps. The App can open Android's battery optimization settings so you can exempt it yourself; it does not request the special "ignore battery optimizations" permission.
Run at startup
Lets the App restore your schedule and, if you've turned that on, resume dimming after your phone restarts.
Vibration
Haptic feedback on certain interactions.
Foreground service
Android requires an ongoing, visible service (with a notification) for an app like this to keep the overlay active reliably - that's what this provides.
Google Play Billing
Lets you buy Night mode Pro through Google Play and lets the App check whether you own it.
Internet and network state
Added by Google's Play Billing and in-app review libraries so they can talk to Google Play. The App itself has no servers and sends nothing to us.

6Internet use

All of the App's own features work fully offline. The App has no servers of its own and never sends your settings, usage or screen content anywhere. The only network traffic comes from Google Play's own libraries: when you buy Night mode Pro, when the App checks with Google Play whether you own Pro, and when Google Play shows its in-app rating prompt. That traffic goes to Google, not to us, and is covered by Google's Privacy Policy.

7Data sharing and third parties

We do not collect personal information, so we do not - and cannot - sell, rent, share, trade, or disclose it to third parties. The App contains no advertising and no analytics software. Purchases are processed entirely by Google Play; we never see your payment details, and Google handles that information under its own privacy policy.

8Data security

Since nothing is transmitted to or stored on any server we operate, there is no remote data of yours to secure. Information stored by the App remains on your device; keeping your device itself secure (screen lock, OS updates, and so on) is what protects it.

9Data retention and deletion

We do not retain personal information because we do not collect it. Data stored locally by the App remains entirely under your control. You can delete it by:

10Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13. Because the App does not collect personal information from anyone, this applies equally to users of any age.

12Third-party and open source software

The App is built with Android and Jetpack Compose libraries and Lottie (animations), each under its open-source license (Apache License 2.0). It also uses Google's Play Billing Library (for purchases) and Play In-App Review Library (for the rating prompt), provided by Google under its own terms. The App contains no advertising or analytics SDKs.

13Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page, with the "Last updated" date above revised accordingly. We encourage you to review it periodically.
