This Privacy Policy describes how Night mode ("the App", "we", "us", "our") handles
information when you use it. The App is built offline-first: it collects no personal
data, has no account, no ads, and no analytics.
1Offline-first approach
Night mode is designed to run entirely on your device. Turning the dimming overlay on or
off, choosing a dim level, scheduling bedtime hours, setting per-app profiles, saving
presets, and every other feature are all processed locally. We do not operate any servers
that collect, store, process, sell, rent, or share your settings, your usage, or anything
about how you use the App.
2Information we collect
We do not collect personal information from users. Specifically, we do not collect:
The App has no account system and no sign-in of any kind - there is nothing tied to you
for us to collect even if we wanted to.
3Settings stored on your device
The App stores your preferences locally, using Android's standard app-storage mechanism, so they persist between sessions:
Dimming on/off state and dim level
Schedule on/off times and repeat days
Per-app profile list and levels
Saved presets
Color filter/tint choice
Notification and Quick Settings tile preferences
Local usage statistics (total time dimmed, session count) shown back to you in the App
This information never leaves your device. It is not transmitted to us or to any third party.
4Accessibility Service - what it sees, and why
Emergency off
Watches for the Volume Up + Volume Down button combination, so you can turn dimming off from anywhere, even outside the App. It does not read anything else about what you're doing.
Per-app profiles
Reads which app is currently in the foreground, purely to apply the dim level you've chosen for that app. The current app's identity is used only in memory to pick a level - it is never logged, stored as history, or transmitted.
Auto-Dim Pro, optional
Periodically captures a screenshot through Android's Accessibility screenshot API, shrinks it to a tiny low-resolution grid, and measures its average brightness on-device to nudge the dim level automatically. The screenshot is processed entirely in memory and discarded immediately after - never saved as an image, never written to disk, never transmitted anywhere. Auto-Dim only runs while you've explicitly turned it on.
All three share one Accessibility service, but each has its own on/off switch, so turning
one on doesn't turn on the others - and none of them function unless you've separately
granted Accessibility permission in Android's system settings.
5Permissions used by the App
Display over other apps
Draws the darkening overlay itself - the one permission the App's core function depends on.
Notifications
Shows an ongoing status notification while dimming is on, with optional quick-adjust buttons.
Accessibility optional
Powers the three features described in Section 4, and nothing else.
Ignore battery optimization optional
Some phone manufacturers aggressively stop background apps to save power; this helps keep dimming running reliably. Asked for, never required.
Run at startup
Lets the App restore your schedule and, if you've turned that on, resume dimming after your phone restarts.
Vibration
Haptic feedback on certain interactions.
Foreground service
Android requires an ongoing, visible service (with a notification) for an app like this to keep the overlay active reliably - that's what this provides.
6No internet access
The App does not request Android's Internet permission at all. It has no technical ability
to send data anywhere - over Wi-Fi, mobile data, or otherwise.
7Data sharing and third parties
Because we do not collect personal information, and the App has no internet access, we do
not - and cannot - sell, rent, share, trade, or disclose personal information to third
parties. The App contains no advertising and no analytics software of any kind.
8Data security
Since nothing is transmitted to or stored on any server we operate, there is no remote data
of yours to secure. Information stored by the App remains on your device; keeping your
device itself secure (screen lock, OS updates, and so on) is what protects it.
9Data retention and deletion
We do not retain personal information because we do not collect it. Data stored locally by the App remains entirely under your control. You can delete it by:
Using "Reset everything" in the App's Diagnostics screen
Clearing the App's storage through Android Settings
Uninstalling the App - since there's no account and no server, uninstalling removes everything the App stored, with nothing left behind anywhere
10Children's privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. Because the App does not collect personal
information from anyone, this applies equally to users of any age.
11Third-party links
The App does not currently link out to any external websites or services from within its own screens. If that changes in a future version, this section will be updated to reflect it.
12Open source software
The App is built using standard Android and Jetpack Compose framework libraries, each
under its own open-source license (for example, the Apache License 2.0). No proprietary
third-party SDKs are used.
13Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this
page, with the "Last updated" date above revised accordingly. We encourage you to review
it periodically.
