How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI (AEO & GEO)

  • AEO
  • GEO
  • ChatGPT
  • Google AI Overviews
  • SEO

Quick answer

AI assistants recommend businesses they can clearly understand and verify. Make your website state plainly who you are, what you offer, where, and at what price. Answer real customer questions in plain language, add structured data, keep your business details identical across Google, directories and social profiles, and earn genuine reviews and mentions. There is no guaranteed trick, but these steps make your business easier for AI to find and cite.

How AI assistants find businesses

When someone asks an AI assistant "who can build a website for my restaurant, and what should it cost?", the assistant doesn't run a single search. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response (Google Search Central). In practice, one question can turn into separate searches about price, location, features, reviews and alternatives.

ChatGPT's search features work from the web too. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and recommends allowing it in your robots.txt file if you want to appear there (OpenAI).

The takeaway: your website needs to cover the whole topic a customer asks about, not just repeat one keyword.

SEO, AEO and GEO: what's the difference?

The question it answersWhat it looks like on your site
SEOCan Google find, understand and rank this page?Fast pages, clear titles and headings, keywords, internal links, sitemap
AEOCan a search or answer engine lift a direct answer from this page?Question headings with the answer in the first sentence, FAQs, prices in text
GEODoes an AI know enough trustworthy facts about my business to recommend it?A clear description of who, what, where; consistent details everywhere; reviews and mentions

Google itself says there are no extra requirements, AI text files or special schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that SEO fundamentals remain the foundation. AEO and GEO are best thought of as doing those fundamentals thoroughly, with AI readers in mind.

7 steps to get recommended more often

1. Say who you are, what you do and where, in one sentence

For example: "Sharma Dental is a family dental clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai, offering check-ups, root canals, braces and implants." Put a sentence like this near the top of your Home and About pages. AI systems shouldn't have to guess your location or services from your footer.

2. Publish prices and what's included, in text

Price is one of the first things people ask an assistant. Starting prices or ranges written in text, not inside images, give the AI a direct answer to quote.

3. Answer the questions customers actually ask

Write short FAQ sections with the question as a heading and the answer in the first sentence. Use the words customers use: "how much", "how long", "do you", "can I".

4. Add structured data that matches the page

Organization or LocalBusiness schema, FAQ and breadcrumb markup help search engines understand your pages. Make sure the markup matches what visitors can see, and never add fake reviews or ratings.

5. Keep your business details identical everywhere

Your business name, address, phone and website should match exactly on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Inconsistent details make it harder for any system to be confident about who you are.

6. Earn genuine reviews and mentions

Real reviews on Google, mentions in local directories or publications, and links from your clients or partners are independent evidence that your business exists and does good work. Avoid paid fake reviews; they can harm you.

7. Let the crawlers in, then measure

Check that your robots.txt doesn't block Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot. Then watch Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to see which pages and questions are bringing you visibility.

What not to do

  • Stuffing keywords or city names into every sentence.
  • Publishing dozens of near-identical pages that only swap the business type or city.
  • Buying fake reviews or fake mentions.
  • Hiding key information such as prices or services inside images or PDFs only.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. AI assistants decide their answers themselves, and anyone promising a guaranteed mention is overselling. What you can control is how clearly and consistently your business information is published, which is what AI systems rely on.

Do I need special AI files or schema to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard SEO best practices, helpful content and a crawlable website are the foundation.

How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?

It varies. Search engines first need to crawl and index your pages, and AI answers tend to favour businesses with consistent information and some third-party mentions or reviews. Expect weeks to months rather than days.
