Hiring a Web Designer from India: An Honest Guide for Overseas Businesses
Quick answer
Hiring a web designer in India can get you a professionally built website for a fraction of local agency prices in the US, UK, Australia or the Gulf, and it works well when you vet properly: open live sites they have built, agree a written scope and fixed price, pay in milestones, and keep your domain, hosting and analytics in your own name. India is UTC+5:30 all year, so plan communication around the overlap with your working day. Exports of services from India are normally zero-rated for Indian GST.
Businesses outside India hire Indian web designers for one main reason: the same budget buys more work. A small business in Texas, Leeds or Dubai can often get a custom-designed, search-optimised site for well under local agency prices. The difference mostly reflects lower living costs and overheads. But offshore web design also has a mixed reputation, earned by projects with vague briefs, no contracts and suppliers who disappear after the deposit. This guide is about getting the first outcome and avoiding the second.
A note on who wrote it: BunkWise is a web design company in India, so we have an interest in this topic. We have tried to write the guide we would want to read if we were on the other side, including the reasons to choose a local designer instead.
When hiring from India makes sense, and when it doesn't
It tends to work well when:
- You are comfortable briefing in writing and giving feedback over email, WhatsApp or a shared document.
- You want a well-scoped site (a business website, a service business, a small catalogue) rather than months of workshops.
- The budget matters and you would rather spend the difference on content, photography or advertising.
A local designer is the better choice when:
- You want someone to visit your premises, take photos or run in-person workshops.
- Your project depends on local knowledge you can't easily write down, such as regulated industries with country-specific rules.
- A local grant or voucher only applies to domestic or pre-approved suppliers, as in some Singapore and Irish schemes.
What it costs compared with hiring locally
Local prices vary a lot by country, so the best comparison is with your own market. Our country guides give sourced ranges for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore, Ireland and New Zealand. As one reference point, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for web developers and digital designers at $47.85 an hour, before any agency overhead or margin.
Be wary of the very cheapest offshore offers. In Australia, Paramark lists offshore freelancers at A$100–A$500+, against A$1,500–A$2,500+ for a local freelancer; at that price, expect a lightly adapted template with little strategy or support. A sensible Indian quote for a proper small business site is well below local agency prices, but it is not a few hundred dollars.
Time zones: when you can actually talk
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and doesn't change for daylight saving, so the gap with your city shifts by an hour when your clocks change.
| Your city | India is… | Best time for a call (your time) |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai, Abu Dhabi | 1.5 hours ahead | Most of the working day |
| Singapore, Perth | 2.5 hours behind | Late morning to late afternoon |
| London, Dublin | 4.5 hours ahead (summer), 5.5 (winter) | Morning to early afternoon |
| Sydney, Melbourne | 4.5 hours behind (5.5 in Australian summer) | Afternoon |
| Auckland | 6.5 hours behind (7.5 in NZ summer) | Afternoon |
| New York, Toronto | 9.5 hours ahead (summer), 10.5 (winter) | Early morning, or async |
| Los Angeles, Vancouver | 12.5 hours ahead (summer), 13.5 (winter) | Evening, or async |
For North America, the big time difference can actually help: you send feedback at the end of your day and wake up to the changes. What matters is agreeing a rhythm up front, for example written feedback daily and one video call a week at a fixed time.
How to vet a web designer in India
- Open live sites they have built, not just screenshots or a Dribbble gallery. Check them on your phone.
- Test the speed of one or two of those sites with Google's free PageSpeed Insights. A designer who cares about performance will have nothing to hide.
- Ask who does the work. Is it the person you are talking to, a team, or subcontractors?
- Look for published or fixed prices. A provider who can't tell you roughly what a five-page site costs before a long discovery call may be pricing you by what they think you can pay.
- Ask how they handle SEO, and be suspicious of promises. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
- Run a small first step. A paid discovery or homepage design, before committing the full budget, shows you how they communicate.
Seven things your contract should say
- Scope: the list of pages, features and integrations, and what is not included.
- Timeline: milestones with dates, and what happens if either side is late.
- Price and payments: the fixed price, the currency, and a milestone schedule.
- Revisions: how many rounds of changes are included at each stage.
- Ownership: that you own the design, content and code once paid for.
- Accounts: that the domain, hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console and Business Profile are registered to you, with the designer added as a user.
- After launch: what support is included, for how long, and what changes cost afterwards.
Payments and tax
Milestone payments protect both sides: a deposit to start, a payment when the design is approved, and the balance at launch is a common pattern. Agree the currency and method in writing and factor in bank or transfer fees on your side.
On the Indian side, qualifying exports of services are zero-rated under Section 16 of the IGST Act, so an Indian supplier invoicing a client abroad normally adds no Indian GST. On your side, your own country's rules apply. In the UK, for example, VAT-registered businesses usually account for VAT on services from abroad through the reverse charge. Your accountant can confirm how it works where you are.
Red flags
- Guarantees of a #1 ranking, or of being recommended by ChatGPT.
- Full payment upfront for anything beyond a very small job.
- No live sites you can open, or a portfolio that is only mock-ups.
- Reluctance to register the domain or hosting in your name.
- A "custom design" that turns out to be an unmodified theme.
- Timelines that seem too fast for the scope, and no written plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to hire a web designer from India?
It is as safe as hiring anyone remotely, provided you check live work they have built, agree a written scope and fixed price, pay in milestones, and keep your domain, hosting and analytics accounts in your own name. Most problems with offshore projects come from vague briefs and missing contracts rather than location.
Will I pay Indian GST on a website built in India?
Usually not. India treats qualifying exports of services as zero-rated under Section 16 of the IGST Act, so an Indian supplier invoicing a client outside India normally charges no GST. Your own country's rules on services bought from abroad, such as a VAT reverse charge, may still apply.
What time zone is India in?
India uses India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, all year with no daylight saving. That puts it 1.5 hours ahead of Dubai, 4.5–5.5 hours ahead of London and 9.5–10.5 hours ahead of New York, depending on the season.
How should I pay an overseas web designer?
Pay in milestones tied to agreed deliverables, for example a deposit to start, a payment when the design is approved and the balance at launch. Agree the currency and payment method in writing, and avoid paying the full amount upfront for a larger project.
Who owns a website built by an overseas designer?
Whoever the contract says. Make sure it states that you own the finished design, content and code once paid, and that the domain, hosting, Google Analytics and Search Console accounts are registered to you from the start.
